Not the spare. The stock chrome applique wheel cover was hiding all of the corrosion until it delaminated and fell off.

He... told us he tried with the vice since he didn’t have a pipe wrench big enough to wrestle the filter. But just as it happened didn’t mention that he left it in place when he made the decision to hit the highway and come to the shop.

Honestly I think they should of handed him a new car. 50 years of loyalty and he gets a snow globe. Little disappointing. Its kind of why I put his photo on here. If VWAG doesn’t recognize him, maybe the internet will. And man, did the internet ever deliver!

heated mirrors right?

and this is why dirt cheap non powered mirrors are better

(and handcranked windows are a safety feature damnit...why does no one have them anymore?)

Yesterday I heard of a stubborn oil flitter removal technique that id never thought of. Drill 2 holes  in the flat side and use a pin wrench to turn it. It’s like using 2 screwdrivers instead of 1.

Fullerish story on 50 year mechanic would’ve been nice. Irregardless, a snowglobe is beyond comprehension. If that was me the photographer would have hit say che... massive grin as a wrench buries itself in that cheap prick for posterity.

De-motivational posters were a unexpectedly nice touch this week.  Vol. 150, don’t look back.

Yeah, I can see how that axle in the 2nd one got torched. Most of us were familiar with the method of putting rotors on a RWD car. Pack bearings, put bearings in rotor, place rotor on spindle, tighten spindle nut while spinning rotor, back nut off and retighten finger-tight, install retainer and lock pin.”

then I got an old F-250 with a Dana 60 full-floating rear.  Had to replace the rear wheel cylinders, and on that generation of truck that meant pulling out the axle shafts and drum/hub/bearing assembly. my dumb ass thought the process for pre-loading the bearings was the same.  Thankfully the head mechanic was hanging around while I was working on it and said “hold the phone there, that’s not how you do it.”  The process for the Dana 60 was to torque the hub nut to a certain value, back it off, then re torque it while checking end play with a dial indicator.  When you reached the target end play it was set, and you tapped the keeper wedge into the groove in the axle tube to retain the nut.   He probably saved me from a trashed axle.

First thing I thought of when I saw that vice was The Doobie Brothers...and then I wondered if it occurred in Florida or, better still, Miami.

I must say...curating this week was clearly a challenge. So much material...

That reminds me, speaking of the integrated rotorhub bearings...

At the parts store a few months ago, I heard one of the customers complaining about the quality of his recently installed (and recently failed) wheel bearings. The previ ous set had lasted for many years, but when he went to replace them, he fou nd the hub nut to be “only” nearly finger-tight. So he took it upon himself to “correct ” that “error” when he installed the new bearings. I don’t know how much he had ree fed on them, but it was probably in the triple-digits if he was trying to tighten them like you do on modern hub assemblies...

yeah, it’s weird for me too. I did my Ranger’s other front wheel hub/bearing assembly a couple of weeks ago, and the torque spec for the hub nut is 184 lb-ft. I figure if the spec is that oddly specific, there’s a reason.
